Welcome
Welcome to the Association for Tarot Studies, an international tarot
society that has a small but vibrant membership from various parts
of the world. The ATS encourages, and is joined by those who have a
keen interest in tarot studies and research in its various forms. Members
who have actively requested such have a link in the members' area.
The ATS also recognises each member's right and responsibility in
using tarot in their own individual manner. Our website aims to be
of benefit
to both member and non-member alike in ongoing tarot studies.
We hope you find our website helpful, and welcome your support in
furthering
the aims of the Association.
About the ATS
The Association for Tarot Studies began as a small
group of individuals with varied and eclectic interests in tarot.
As organisation of the 2005 Melbourne International Tarot Conference
began to take shape in 2002, a new body also became incorporated
as an Association in the State of Victoria, Australia. Membership
has since grown to include individuals from various parts of the
world. For further information about the Association for Tarot

Temperance from Kat Black's newly released Touchstone Tarot, electronically collaged from Baroque and Renaissance art:

September 2008
Touchstone Tarot
Kat Black’s got a new deck out! Before even providing a more formal review, all I can say is that she’s done it again! I not only remain astonished at the inherent beauty of her previous deck — the Golden Tarot — but find through browsing her latest deck again that magic touch of subtle blending of exquisite artwork into a near seamless set (except perhaps for a couple of cards). The deck strongly shows, as for her previous work, an influence from the Waite-Smith pattern. I suppose that, personally, that is one aspect that I would have preferred was avoided. On the other hand, the many who prefer that pattern will be delighted that such is the case! The colours, online, were far brighter than the limited edition imprint. I’m not sure if that is a colour setting synchronisation to the printer not ideally established, though it remains, in any case, a minor point. This is a deck that is currently published in a very limited edition, and well worth a copy!

...and Quantum Tarot
Come to think of it, this month is not one newly released privately printed deck, but also another — the other one from the UK: Quantum Tarot by Kay Stopforth and Chris Butler. In stark contrast to the Touchstone Tarot that uses classical paintings, the Quantum Tarot incorporates concepts from modern physics electronically rendered and incorporated into cards by reflective association:

Upcoming events
On the events front, later this month Linda Marson embarks on a second tarot trip to Peru. For those who are interested, there may still be places available.
Also keep in mind next month’s UK Tarot Conference, which is expected to include Rachel Pollack, Jane Lyle and Tim Sullivan (amongst others).

The Story
of the Waite-Smith Tarot
by K. Frank Jensen
Frank Jensen has long been amongst the key players
in presenting information on the development of this
important deck in the history of Tarot. During the
second half of the 20th century, sales of this deck
surpassed all others.
We now have the opportunity to read on this deck's
history during its key phases during the past 100
years.
Whether a enthusiast for this deck or not, this
will become a classic in manuscripts that focus openly
on important developments. A welcome addition that
the Association for Tarot Studies is proud
to be able to present.

Tarot History
Without a sense of tarot's history, many claims are inaccurately
repeated. One of the best sources for an overview of tarot's
history is Tarotpedia's entry. Even its entry, however, is
dependant on the research of numerous others.
